Bluetooth vs ANT+ devices

Use this reference when a sensor or treadmill advertises Bluetooth, ANT+, or both.

Kinni’s current device-connection flows use Bluetooth. When you choose a treadmill, heart-rate monitor, or foot pod for Kinni, check the Bluetooth support first.

Bluetooth is the connection path Kinni uses on the run setup screens:

  • Treadmill scanning looks for supported treadmill Bluetooth services, including FTMS and supported FitShow-style services.
  • Heart rate monitor scanning looks for the Bluetooth Heart Rate Service.
  • Foot pod scanning looks for the Bluetooth Running Speed and Cadence service.

If a device advertises the right Bluetooth service, it can appear in the relevant Scan & connect list.

ANT+ is common in sport sensors, especially older heart-rate straps and foot pods. Kinni does not use ANT+ as its app connection path. A sensor that is ANT+ only should not be expected to appear in Kinni’s Bluetooth scan.

Some devices support both Bluetooth and ANT+. In that case, enable the Bluetooth broadcast mode and make sure another app or watch has not already taken the Bluetooth connection.

Before buying or troubleshooting a sensor for Kinni, check for these phrases in the device specification:

If a dual Bluetooth/ANT+ sensor does not appear

Section titled “If a dual Bluetooth/ANT+ sensor does not appear”
  • Put the sensor into Bluetooth mode if the manufacturer provides separate modes.
  • Disconnect it from watches, bike computers, and other phones.
  • Restart the scan in Kinni.
  • Check the battery, because low battery can make Bluetooth advertising unreliable.
  • Confirm you are scanning from the matching Kinni card: heart-rate monitors and foot pods use separate scan screens.
